Why I Am Running for Mayor

I’ve been a resident since 1998; and have served our community as an alternate board member of the Board of Adjustments and as a seated member on the board. I was the Chairman of the Land Acquisition Advisory Board and in 2002, I ran for town council.

I served on council for 4 terms; 2002-2004; 2004-2006 (Vice Mayor); 2008 (Mayor) 2009-2010 (Mayor).

Throughout these years of service on council I’ve supported and voted for fully funded Police/ Fire/EMS Budgets. Our Barrier Island location requires us to rely on our own resources and I supported Home Rule long before it became popular.

In February of 2007, I traveled to Washington D.C. on a legislative advocacy trip sponsored by the Florida League of Cities. I successfully lobbied FEMA Director David Paulison to issue a Federal Disaster Declaration following the 2006 Christmas Day Storms that left Volusia County with a lot of damaged properties and limited funding to mitigate the storm damage. Although an initial request for a disaster declaration had been declined; this lobbying effort freed up $Millions in Disaster Funding for Volusia Residents.

In 2009 when we were experiencing the fallout of the economic recession brought on by lack of regulatory oversight, I presided over budgetary hearings that cut 1 million (25%) from the towns budget. We were able to maintain a fully staffed operation and experienced no layoffs.

I developed a reputation for running a respectful, well mannered town council chambers and never lost sight of the fact that my job is to serve our citizens. I have comprehensive budgeting skill acquired throughout a career in facilities operations management.

Throughout Fiscal 2009-2010 Town Council easily tripled the amount of typical monthly meetings held as we waded through many changes in our Land Use & Zoning Regulations to ensure that their language was consistent with our Visioning Statement.

I was a member of the original Visioning Task Force and knew how crucial this aspect of “how we saw ourselves “would be as we matured into the sought-after haven we’ve become.

We need a seasoned leader who can develop strategies for solving pressing current problems; but that first requires that one recognizes the uncomfortable truth that Volusia County EVAC isn’t our friend. Friends act like partners; they share burdens equitably and equally. They are not supposed to behave like resource grabbing hogs. It has escaped current long-term members of council that they’ll accomplish nothing by negotiating with the county; we need to petition our legislative assembly to assist us in an enduring set of rule changes and an effective transport solution to replace the existing one which is unworkable in its badly designed current iteration. It serves the county only. Regrettably, we’re burning through taxpayer’s dollars bashing our employees rather than seeking long term Fire Services/EMS Transport solutions that will sustain us in our beautiful but geographically unique location. I intend to change this.
