PONCE INLET ANIMAL WELFARE (PAW)

By Nancy Epps, President

Ponce Inlet Animal Welfare continues to support the town-sanctioned trap–neuter–return (TNR) colony. Tiki, the mama cat who hid her kittens under the stage at Jerry’s, is still using the colony as her feeding station, so we are again trying to trap her there.

She needs to be spayed and get her shots and be microchipped. Her kittens have all been trapped, and two have been adopted into a very loving home in Ormond Beach.

Two adorable kittens are still available for a loving home. They are bonded with each other, and we would like to find a home for them to stay together. They will be neutered/spayed, get their shots and be microchipped in the middle of October and will be able to move to their new home.

A nice neighbor in Las Olas contacted me recently about trapping a nice Tom cat that had taken up residence in her back yard. She wanted our assistance to trap him, get him neutered and get his shots, and then return him to her yard. She was able to trap him in a large cage that was too big for either of us to transport, so I called Chief Glazier to see if the police department could help us. Two very nice officers came to assist. Only in a wonderful small town like Ponce Inlet would you find such a great police department! They were able to get him in the carrier, but he bolted before the door could be closed! Needless to say, it was really frustrating to all of us, so now there is another cat to trap.

Just as I had finished this article, one of our original colony cats became very ill. With help from Terri, another volunteer, we were able to get her into a carrier and get her to the emergency veterinarian clinic. Sadly, she turned out to be too ill to save, and we had to have her euthanized.

Rest in peace in cat heaven, Nosey. We miss you very much.

As I mentioned in the summer issue, fall brings the sad anniversaries of the passing of our founders, Alan Redinger and Jo Ellen Basile. Alan died on October 16, 2012, and Jo Ellen passed from us on September 11, 2016. PAW is their legacy in Ponce Inlet, and the Halifax Humane Society’s Redinger Spay/Neuter Clinic is Alan’s legacy on the east side of the county.

Please support the Halifax Humane Society and the Clinic to help them continue to provide low-cost spay/neuter services.

PAW uses donated funds to pay for cat care, such as we did for Nosey, and spay/neuter of free-roaming cats in town, so please also remember us with your donations of food or funds.

We can always use more volunteers to augment our feeders’ schedule. Please contact me if you would like to learn more, donate time or food, or need our help: nancyepps@cfl.rr.com, (386) 795-2310 or speak to any of our volunteer feeders/caregivers. The colony is a peaceful, wooded place where you can take a break from our otherwise hectic lives and enjoy nature. Here is a picture of a visitor from earlier today.

Thank you to those generous residents who have donated food and money. We can always use more volunteers to augment our feeders’ schedule.
